Dan Houser Confirms Cancelled Trevor DLC for GTA V Made Way for Red Dead Redemption 2

Dan Houser confirms Rockstar canceled Trevor’s single-player DLC for GTA V to focus on Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar’s Scrapped Trevor Expansion Would Have Sent Him on a Secret Agent Rampage

Rockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto V remains one of the best-selling games in history, but it also carries one of the studio’s biggest “what-ifs.”

For years, fans have speculated about a cancelled single-player expansion centred on Trevor Philips. Now, that long-standing rumour has finally been confirmed by none other than Dan Houser, Rockstar’s co-founder and former head writer.

A Wild Trevor Spin-Off That Never Happened

Speaking on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Houser revealed that Rockstar had indeed planned a Trevor-focused single-player DLC following the release of GTA V.

The expansion would have put the unhinged protagonist in a story where he accidentally becomes a secret agent. This chaotic and darkly comic setup played perfectly into Trevor’s volatile personality. Echoing earlier remarks from actor Steven Ogg, who portrayed Trevor, Houser described the DLC as “crazy fun,” but admitted it was ultimately abandoned mid-development.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Took Priority

The reason, Houser explained, was timing. As Rockstar’s ambitions for Red Dead Redemption 2 grew, the studio redirected all available resources to finish its massive Western sequel.

“If that had come out, we probably wouldn’t have gotten to make Red Dead 2. So, there are always compromises,” Houser said during the interview.

The decision effectively marked the end of Rockstar’s single-player DLC plans for GTA V. This move disappointed many fans and cemented the company’s shift toward GTA Online, which became its primary focus and revenue driver for the next decade.

Houser also shared that he once toyed with a concept for a GTA zombie game, describing it as something he “would’ve loved to make.” Like the Trevor DLC, the idea was never greenlit, although it hints at the kind of experimental direction Rockstar once considered before fully leaning into its blockbuster live-service model.

What Could Have Been

For now, all fans can do is imagine what a GTA V Trevor expansion might have looked like: a high-octane blend of espionage, chaos, and unfiltered madness starring one of gaming’s most unpredictable anti-heroes.

Still, with Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, the spirit of Rockstar’s storytelling ambition clearly isn’t dead, just redirected.
