Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Announced for PS5
Konami has officially unveiled Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, a brand new 2D exploration action title set to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5.
Revealed during the latest State of Play presentation, the project is being developed in collaboration with Evil Empire and Motion Twin, two studios known for their work in the action and roguelite space. The partnership signals a deliberate effort to blend classic Castlevania DNA with modern design sensibilities.
For longtime fans, the announcement marks the series’ return in full 2D, leaning into exploration and tight combat rather than venturing into experimental territory.
Medieval Paris Under Siege
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is set in 1499 Paris, where monstrous creatures suddenly emerge to terrorise the city. Amid burning streets and looming gothic architecture, a successor to Trevor Belmont takes up the legendary Vampire Killer whip to confront the threat.
The narrative premise is simple yet fitting for the franchise: reclaim a city overwhelmed by darkness and push back against forces that thrive in shadow. The action moves between urban environments and a looming castle stronghold, echoing the series’ traditional structure while introducing a new historical backdrop.
The Whip Returns With Expanded Mobility
At the centre of the experience is the Vampire Killer whip, once again serving as the primary tool for combat and traversal. Players can swing across gaps and manipulate positioning in fast-paced encounters, giving the whip a more dynamic role beyond straightforward attacks.
Additional weapons will also be available, including a sword shown during the reveal. While details remain limited, the design philosophy appears to encourage strategic switching between tools depending on enemy type and situation.
Classic elements are firmly intact. Breakable walls hide secrets, including the return of health-restoring meat, and familiar enemies, such as zombies, populate the early stages. Though individually weak, these foes can quickly overwhelm players in groups, reinforcing the series’ emphasis on measured combat.

A Bold New Gothic Art Direction
Visually, Belmont’s Curse adopts a colourful reinterpretation of the series’ gothic aesthetic. Rather than leaning purely into muted tones, the game presents richly detailed environments that maintain the franchise’s dark atmosphere while introducing a sharper, more stylised look.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is scheduled to launch in 2026 exclusively on PlayStation 5.
