Cyberpunk 2077 Surpasses 35 Million Sales in Remarkable Post-Launch Revival
A Dramatic Turnaround for CD Projekt Red
Few would have predicted that Cyberpunk 2077, which launched to widespread criticism and technical issues, would one day become one of CD Projekt Red’s most commercially successful titles.
The situation in 2020 was dire. Bugs, performance problems on older consoles, and mounting pressure from fans and regulators placed the studio in a difficult position. Yet over the past four years, Cyberpunk 2077 has undergone one of gaming’s most notable redemption arcs.
A combination of ongoing patches, mechanical refinements, the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and the Phantom Liberty expansion played a key role in rebuilding the game’s reputation. CD Projekt Red’s commitment to sustained improvement gradually won back player trust, laying the foundation for a massive sales surge.
The 35 Million Milestone
In its latest financial briefing, CD Projekt Red confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold over 35 million copies across all platforms. Notably, the studio highlighted that this number was reached faster than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt within the same timeframe. This achievement underscores the enduring global appeal of the Cyberpunk franchise, even after its troubled launch.
CD Projekt Red also noted that Cyberpunk 2077 has become a significant long-term revenue driver. With recent availability on Nintendo Switch 2 and Mac, the game now spans almost every major hardware ecosystem that supports it.
Cyberpunk’s Future Takes Shape
A small but notable update accompanied the announcement about the series’ future. Cyberpunk 2, internally codenamed Project Orion, is in active development with a team of around 135 staff. Although details remain scarce, the project represents the studio’s commitment to expanding the universe and solidifying Cyberpunk as a multi-entry franchise.
However, the company reiterated that its primary focus remains The Witcher IV, which is currently being developed by a considerably larger team of more than 440 people. This suggests that Cyberpunk 2 is still in its early stages and will likely be several years away.
A Franchise on the Rise
Cyberpunk 2077’s commercial success illustrates a rare industry phenomenon. Few major releases have managed to recover from a troubled debut to become best-sellers, yet CD Projekt Red has achieved precisely that. With its sales curve continuing to climb and multiple projects in development, the Cyberpunk brand appears well-positioned for long-term growth.
