Since the debut of the Darksiders series, fans have been on a winding narrative journey. While the first instalment ended with a massive cliffhanger, subsequent titles shifted focus to prequels centred on other Horsemen. As a result, the core storyline has remained in limbo for over 15 years. Many fans had begun to fear that a proper continuation, one that unites all four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, might never materialise. Fortunately, those fears have now been laid to rest: Darksiders 4 is officially in development.
After months of speculation and heavy teasing, THQ Nordic and developer Gunfire Games have finally unveiled Darksiders 4 with a haunting teaser trailer that sent chills down the spines of longtime fans.
The teaser delivers what fans have long awaited: the return of War, the protagonist of the first game, now joined by the other Horsemen, Death, Fury, and Strife. For the first time in the series’ history, all four riders will fight side by side, fulfilling the promise that has lingered since 2010.
What to Expect in Darksiders 4
Gunfire Games, the studio behind Darksiders III, returns to helm the project. While THQ Nordic has yet to reveal extensive gameplay or story details, a few key points have been confirmed. Darksiders 4 will return to its third-person roots, abandoning the top-down perspective seen in Darksiders Genesis. Even more exciting is the new player freedom, allowing players to choose which of the Four Horsemen they want to play as.
Gameplay will build upon the franchise’s core strengths: fast-paced melee combat infused with supernatural powers, environmental traversal, intricate puzzles, hidden secrets, and massive boss battles. These elements, all hallmarks of the original game, will once again be front and centre.
Darksiders 4 is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A launch window has yet to be announced, but anticipation is already running high for the long-awaited continuation of this apocalyptic saga.
