Ratatan’s Darkest Update Yet Arrives This December With New Chapter & Bosses

Ratatan Expands Early Access With Descent of the Dark Ratatan Update

Early Access Evolution Continues

Rhythm action roguelike Ratatan from Ratata Arts has steadily built a dedicated following during its time in Steam Early Access, blending musical timing with chaotic battlefield management.

Together with publisher Game Source Entertainment, the team has now confirmed the game’s next major step forward with a substantial December update titled Descent of the Dark Ratatan.

The update launches on December 25 and marks the next major phase of the game’s ongoing development, introducing new content, systems, and balance improvements to deepen both progression and replayability.

Chapter Two Opens After World 5

The centrepiece of the update is the introduction of Chapter Two, which becomes available after players complete World 5. This new chapter expands the world with fresh environments, tougher enemy encounters, and additional gameplay challenges designed for more experienced players.

Alongside the new chapter, players will encounter new enemy types and bosses that build on Rhythm‘s rhythm-driven combat system, encouraging tighter timing and smarter unit management.

Dark Ratatan Battles and New Combat Systems

One of the update’s standout additions is the introduction of Dark Ratatan battles. These encounters allow players to command Dark Cobuns against high-level bosses featuring unique mechanics, marking a noticeable escalation in difficulty and complexity.

The update also adds a new system called Duo Ratakaruta. When multiple elemental attributes reach specific thresholds, players can unlock powerful combined cards that significantly alter combat flow. This encourages more deliberate build planning and synergy chasing across runs.

Descent of the Dark Ratatan also introduces several quality-of-life and progression-focused features. A new Goddess Gacha system allows players to exchange unwanted weapons, accessories, and items for points, which can then be used to roll for new rewards. A limited number of items are also included in the gacha pool.

A new Legendary accessory rarity has been added, featuring random Decorune effects that further expand build variety. These additions aim to give long-term players more meaningful progression hooks during repeated runs.

Multiplayer and UI Enhancements

Multiplayer functionality also receives attention in this update. Improvements include better random room joining, refreshed room lists, and overall lobby optimisations to make matchmaking faster and more stable.

Ratata Arts has also implemented a range of UI and UX refinements across menus and systems, smoothing out friction points identified during Early Access.

In addition to the update, the title will be part of the Steam Winter Sale. The game will be available at 15% off from December 18 through January 5, 2026, offering new players a discounted entry point into Early Access.
