Square Enix’s Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Adds New Story Content and Player-Driven Finale

Square Enix confirms Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will include a brand-new, choice-based ending exclusive to the remake.

A Modern Revival with a Twist

The wait for Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate continues, but Square Enix isn’t letting fans go hungry. While the next major instalment remains under wraps, the publisher is looking back to one of the series’ most celebrated chapters with Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, which is a full-scale remake bringing modern technology and storytelling to a beloved classic.

Announced in September 2025, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined immediately stood out for its fully 3D visual overhaul, a bold departure from the HD-2D art style used in recent series remakes. It marks one of Square Enix’s most ambitious efforts to reintroduce a legacy title to both long-time fans and a new generation of players.

A Brand-New Ending for Returning Heroes

In an interview with Game Informer, producer Takeshi Ichikawa confirmed that the remake will include a completely new ending, offering a fresh conclusion shaped by the player’s decisions throughout the adventure. Ichikawa declined to elaborate further, teasing that the new finale will “reward those who look beyond the obvious.”

This addition ensures that even players who’ve completed the original version will have new story paths and emotional payoffs to discover.

Expanded Storytelling and Cinematic Upgrades

Square Enix has also confirmed that Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will include new story arcs and additional cutscenes, designed to enhance the game’s emotional depth.

The remake combines these narrative expansions with modernised visuals, reworked environments, and fully voiced performances to deliver what the studio calls the “definitive edition” of the 2000 classic. For a franchise built on legacy and renewal, this remake looks ready to bridge generations one island, and one choice, at a time.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launches on February 5, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
