Elden Ring Nightreign Adding Duo Expeditions As 3.5 Million Nightfarers Join the Fight

In a surprising yet ambitious move, FromSoftware, long known for their punishing single-player experiences, ventured deeper into multiplayer territory with Elden Ring Nightreign. Traditionally, multiplayer has always been a supplementary feature in Souls titles. This led many players to believe that the formula simply couldn’t stand as a multiplayer-first product. Nightreign, however, has proven otherwise.

The cooperative gameplay concept in Elden Ring Nightreign, which allows up to three players to explore and fight together, has turned out to be a resounding success. Publisher Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware recently announced that the cumulative sales of Nightreign, both physical and digital, have officially surpassed 3.5 million copies worldwide.

To celebrate this milestone, FromSoftware shared a message of gratitude to the community on social media, while also promising continued support for the game. Alongside the paid DLC slated for release later this year, the developer confirmed that Duo Expeditions is in development. This mode, which would enable two-player co-op without requiring a third, is a highly requested feature that is currently unavailable in the game.

Even more encouraging is how the studio has responded to early criticism. Nightreign initially launched to mixed reviews on Steam, becoming one of FromSoftware’s lowest-rated titles on the platform at the time. However, thanks to a steady stream of updates that addressed community feedback and refined gameplay mechanics, the perception has shifted dramatically. The Steam version of Elden Ring Nightreign now holds a Mostly Positive rating.

It’s worth noting that Nightreign isn’t FromSoftware’s only multiplayer-focused Souls-like in development. The studio is also working on The Duskbloods, a new project incorporating a PvPvE format, set to launch on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

FromSoftware’s evolving approach signals a new era where the studio is embracing multiplayer design not just as an optional add-on, but as a core experience, while staying true to the essence of their punishing yet rewarding gameplay.
