Survive, Mutate and Pinch Evolutionary Roguelite Everything is Crab Playtest Begins on Steam

Everything is Crab Brings Animal Evolution Roguelite Chaos to Steam Playtest

Indie studio Odd Dreams Digital and publisher Secret Mode have announced their debut title, Everything is Crab, an animal evolution roguelite with a Steam Playtest now underway. Scheduled to launch i2026 fully, the game combines surreal humour with deep survival mechanics in a world where players must claw their way up the evolutionary ladder.

Adapt, Mutate, Survive

Players begin life as an amorphous blob, fighting to endure in a hostile ecosystem. Predators roam every corner, but survival comes through absorbing lifeforce from defeated creatures or choosing a more peaceful, plant-based path. Over 100 mutations inspired by real-life animals allow players to create bizarre hybrid forms, resulting in unpredictable builds and playstyles.

Scenarios such as surviving an Ice Age or battling giant enemy bosses demand quick adaptation. With each death, players are reborn with new genetic traits, ensuring that even failed runs contribute to long-term progression.

A Living Ecosystem

The game world features multiple biomes — from tundra to scorching red deserts — each filled with unique hazards and opportunities. A day-night cycle influences encounters, forcing players to adapt their strategies to shifting conditions. Boss battles emphasise timing and patience, with players needing to dodge massive attacks before striking back with precision.

Roguelite with Humour

Despite its evolutionary theme, Everything is Crab doesn’t shy away from comedy. The developers themselves joke that Odd Dreams Digital is “definitely not several crabs in a trench coat,” underscoring the quirky tone. The game’s central theme of carcinisation — the evolutionary tendency for creatures to become crab-like — is both a running gag and a gameplay hook.

Availability

Everything is Crab will release on PC via Steam in 2026, but players can try the game early through its ongoing Steam Playtest. With over 100 mutations, a living ecosystem, and a tongue-in-cheek style, the game promises a fresh take on the roguelite genre.
