Koei Tecmo & Team Ninja Reveal Fatal Frame II Remake for Current-Gen Consoles

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have confirmed that one of their most celebrated horror titles is making a comeback. The newly announced Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is currently in development and will launch in early 2026 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

A Return to the Village of Nightmares

The game revisits the story of twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura, who stumble into a village erased from maps and plagued by supernatural forces. Pursued by vengeful spirits and separated from each other, Mio must navigate haunted ruins and uncover the secrets of a forbidden ritual, armed only with the Camera Obscura — a device capable of capturing and sealing away ghosts.

Guided by the imagery of a crimson butterfly, the remake promises to heighten the chilling atmosphere of the original while exploring themes of family bonds and sacrifice.

Modern Enhancements

Originally released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remains one of the most acclaimed entries in the franchise. The 2026 remake will deliver a complete graphical and audio overhaul, with updated environments, lighting, and sound design. Gameplay systems and controls have also been reworked to bring the experience in line with modern standards, while retaining the tension and dread that defined the original.

Release and Localisation for Fatal Frame II

The remake will feature Japanese voice acting with text support in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja say the project aims to reintroduce the series to a new generation of players while giving long-time fans a definitive version of a cult classic.

The Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will arrive in early 2026 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
