A global phenomenon: that phrase hardly feels like an exaggeration when it comes to describing HoYoverse’s open-world action RPG, Genshin Impact. Launched during the height of the pandemic, the game quickly captured the attention of gamers worldwide by proving that a free-to-play title with gacha monetisation could still offer top-tier quality in visual presentation, music, and gameplay. Its success not only cemented its position in the global gaming scene but also helped bolster the Chinese gaming industry as a whole.
miHoYo, now known globally as HoYoverse, is famously tight-lipped when it comes to sharing specific data about Genshin Impact. However, thanks to data released by the Chinese government, fans and analysts now have a clearer picture.
The latest statistics were published by The Paper and the Shanghai Animation Industry Association, under the supervision of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, and translated by a member of the community.
The Impact of Genshin Impact
According to the report, Genshin Impact now boasts approximately 300 million users globally. What makes this figure even more remarkable is the balanced distribution of its player base, split 50:50 between China and international markets. The report also reveals that nearly 40% of Genshin Impact’s players are women, while the dominant age group lies between 18 and 30 years old, comprising around 70% of the total user base.

Genshin Impact is credited as an IP that resonates strongly with younger audiences, with high growth potential and strong long-term player engagement. The game also enjoys a massive following across various social media platforms, with a combined 60 million followers.
Unfortunately, the report does not shed light on one of the most speculated metrics — the game’s revenue, either monthly or total. Still, the absence of financial figures does little to diminish the perception that Genshin Impact remains one of the most popular gacha games in the world, even as it continues to age.
