Polyphony Digital Signals Gran Turismo 8
Gran Turismo has long stood as Sony’s benchmark for high-fidelity racing simulation. Since its PlayStation debut, Polyphony Digital’s flagship series has consistently served as both a technical showcase and a pillar of the sim racing genre.
Now, new evidence suggests the studio may be preparing for the franchise’s next chapter.
Job Listings Hint at New Development
Although Gran Turismo 7 continues to receive regular updates, including new cars and tracks, Polyphony has opened approximately 18 new positions tied to Gran Turismo production.
Accompanying the listings was a message from franchise creator and studio head Kazunori Yamauchi, reflecting on the series’ 25-plus-year legacy and emphasising that there is still room to push the boundaries of racing simulation.
Crucially, the job descriptions reference work on “Gran Turismo” without specifying the seventh entry. The wording centres on “creating” rather than maintaining or expanding, which strongly implies development of a new instalment rather than continued live service support.

A Project Likely Years Away
Historically, new Gran Turismo entries require long development cycles. Polyphony Digital is known for its meticulous attention to detail, from laser-scanned circuits to photorealistic vehicle modelling and complex physics systems.
With recruitment ramping up in 2026, Gran Turismo 8 is unlikely to be imminent. Instead, the timeline suggests a multi-year development process, potentially aligning with the latter half of the current hardware cycle.
Positioned for the Future of PlayStation
There is also speculation that Gran Turismo 8 could serve as a technological flagship for future PlayStation hardware. The series has frequently debuted alongside major generational transitions, showcasing advances in rendering, performance, and simulation.
While Sony and Polyphony Digital have not formally announced a new title, the recruitment drive leaves little doubt that the studio is laying groundwork for the franchise’s next evolution. For now, Gran Turismo 7 continues to carry the torch, but the engine for the next era appears to have quietly started.
