Horizon Steel Frontiers Raises New Questions
After years of rumours and internal leaks, Sony and NCSoft finally unveiled Horizon Steel Frontiers, a full-scale MMORPG set in Guerrilla Games’ post-apocalyptic universe. Its reveal showcased large-scale raids, fast-paced action, and an approach that leans closer to Monster Hunter-style encounters than traditional Horizon gameplay.
Yet as soon as the project was announced, fans revived a long-standing question. What happened to Guerrilla Games’ own multiplayer title, the one the studio confirmed several years ago but has not spoken about since?
The concern is understandable. NCSoft’s MMO appears to target online cooperative play, which overlaps with what Guerrilla had previously hinted at. The confusion grew when NCSoft confirmed that Steel Frontiers would launch on PC and mobile, but not PlayStation 5, making its place in Sony’s ecosystem even more puzzling.
An Update From Jason Schreier
While Guerrilla has remained silent, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier offered a small but significant update. According to Schreier, Guerrilla is still actively developing its Horizon multiplayer game, and NCSoft’s MMO has not replaced or cancelled the original project.
His comments reaffirm that Guerrilla’s multiplayer effort remains one of the studio’s following major internal projects.
Two Horizon Online Projects Moving Forward
Schreier did not reveal further details regarding the gameplay or structure of Guerrilla’s project. There is no confirmation on whether it will lean toward cooperative action, shared world progression, survival design, or a hybrid structure similar to other live service titles.
Sony has also provided no timeline or guidance on when the game might be unveiled.
Coexistence or Competition
For now, one thing is clear. The franchise will soon host two distinct online titles in development simultaneously. How these two projects will coexist without splitting the audience or overlapping too closely in concept remains one of the central questions facing the franchise’s future.
With Steel Frontiers officially revealed and Guerrilla’s project still in active development, fans may be looking at a Horizon ecosystem far larger than expected.
