Carrying the Torch of Survival Horror RPGs

While Square Enix has revitalised franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest through high-profile remakes, fans of Parasite Eve have been left waiting. Now, Chinese indie studio IceSitruuna has unveiled Parasite Mutant, a survival horror RPG that channels the DNA of the long-dormant classic.

The reveal trailer highlights a blend of horror exploration, RPG combat, and retro presentation that evokes the atmosphere of late 1990s and early 2000s titles. The game will include optional CRT and vintage filters to enhance the nostalgic experience.

Story and Setting

Players take on the role of Nova, a psionic agent investigating a mysterious abandoned island. Her mission quickly unravels into a desperate struggle for survival, as she encounters monstrous creatures and treacherous environments. Puzzle-solving will play a key role alongside combat, reinforcing the survival horror roots.

Combat and Customisation

Parasite Mutant introduces the Active Time Chain system, a clear homage to Parasite Eve’s battle mechanics. This system blends real-time positioning with turn-based commands, giving combat a tactical edge.

Beyond combat, players can customise Nova’s appearance through hairstyles, outfits, and colour variations — an unusual but welcome twist for a horror title, adding personality to the survival journey.

Release Window and Platforms

Parasite Mutant is currently scheduled to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PC. Though it carries no official connection to Square Enix’s Parasite Eve, IceSitruuna’s project positions itself as a spiritual successor, rekindling the blend of RPG depth and survival horror that fans have missed for decades.
