Konami Turned Down a Matrix Game Pitched to Hideo Kojima Without Telling Him

Hideo Kojima Reveals He Was Never Told About The Wachowskis’ Matrix Game Offer

A lost piece of gaming history has resurfaced, revealing that The Matrix directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski once approached Konami in the late 1990s to pitch a video game adaptation, one they wanted Hideo Kojima to direct.

The surprising revelation came from a recent Time Extension interview with former Konami executive Christopher Bergstresser, who shared that The Wachowskis were huge fans of Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series and hoped to collaborate with him on a project set in the Matrix universe.

According to Bergstresser, Konami rejected the proposal outright, effectively shutting down what could have been one of the most fascinating partnerships between Hollywood and gaming at the time.

Kojima Found Out 26 Years Later

Hideo Kojima’s post on X confirmed that he only learned about the offer in 2025 — more than 26 years after The Wachowskis made it.

In a statement on his website, Kojima revealed that Konami never informed him of the directors’ interest, and that he discovered the story through the same article fans were reading.

“I didn’t know about this at all,” Kojima wrote. “It’s a fascinating ‘what if’ scenario — one that I would have seriously considered at the time.”

At the time of the offer, Kojima was deeply involved in the development of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for PlayStation 2, which would go on to become one of the defining games of its generation.

A Missed Collaboration Between Visionaries

Kojima also shared that he had met The Wachowskis several times during Matrix preview screenings in Japan and had exchanged emails with them since 1999. Still, the topic of a game collaboration never came up.

“We admired each other’s work,” Kojima said. “But we never discussed making a Matrix game together — I wish I had known about their proposal.”

Given Kojima’s cinematic storytelling and The Wachowskis’ world-building, the prospect of a Matrix game under his direction continues to ignite fans’ imagination.

Konami Silent on Why the Pitch Was Rejected

So far, Konami has not commented on why the proposal was turned down — or why Kojima was never informed of it.

The revelation has left fans reflecting on what could have been: a Matrix adaptation shaped by the same creative mind that turned Metal Gear Solid into an interactive cinematic experience.

More than two decades later, the story adds yet another layer to Kojima’s long and complicated history with Konami and a reminder of the creative opportunities that never saw the light of day.
