A Big Year Ahead for Fighting Games
2026 is shaping up to be a defining year for fighting games. Among the biggest surprises is Marvel Games’ decision to return to the genre after years away, this time partnering with Arc System Works rather than long-time collaborator Capcom.
The announcement of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls immediately turned heads. Arc System Works is known for stylised, mechanically dense fighters such as Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ, making the collaboration feel both bold and logical. While some fans questioned the move away from Capcom’s legacy, anticipation for this anime-infused Marvel fighter remains high.
Now, thanks to an unexpected Steam update, we have a clearer idea of just how ambitious the project might be.
Steam Listing Briefly Reveals Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls Launch Roster Size
Although Sony and Arc System Works have yet to officially unveil the full character lineup, a premature update to the game’s Steam store page revealed previously undisclosed details.
The information was quickly removed, but not before fans captured key details. The update is widely believed to have gone live ahead of schedule, possibly intended for a reveal during Sony’s upcoming State of Play broadcast.
At Least 20 Playable Characters at Launch
According to the briefly published Steam description, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will launch with at least 20 playable characters.

So far, only eight fighters have been officially showcased in earlier promotional material. These include Captain America, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, Storm, Doctor Doom, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, and Star-Lord. All feature Arc System Works’ signature anime-inspired presentation, complete with dynamic animations and stylised combat flair.
If the Steam information holds true, that leaves at least 12 additional characters still waiting to be revealed before launch.
Offline, Online, and Story Modes Confirmed
Beyond roster size, the Steam page also outlined core features. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will support both offline and online competitive play, with online lobbies capable of hosting up to 64 players simultaneously.
Single-player fans will not be overlooked either. The listing confirmed an “Episode Mode”, suggesting a narrative-driven component designed to explore story and character arcs beyond traditional versus battles.
For a studio known for blending strong mechanics with cinematic flair, the inclusion of structured story content feels consistent with Arc System Works’ broader design philosophy.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is scheduled to launch in 2026, though an exact release date has not yet been confirmed. The game will be available on PlayStation 5 and PC.
