MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Launches August 6 on PS5 and PC

Arc System Works has confirmed that MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will launch on August 6 for PlayStation 5 and PC. The announcement came during the latest State of Play presentation, alongside a new trailer introducing the game’s first featured team, the Unbreakable X-Men.

Developed in collaboration with Marvel Games, the 2D fighter blends Arc System Works’ signature anime-infused style with iconic Marvel heroes and villains, positioning itself as one of the year’s most high-profile competitive releases.

The Unbreakable X-Men Take the Lead

The new trailer centres on a reformed X-Men lineup assembled to confront a looming global threat. In the game’s storyline, several core members have been forced off the battlefield after a recent conflict, leaving Storm to step into a leadership role under the guidance of Charles Xavier.

This new team, dubbed the Unbreakable X-Men, includes Storm, Magik, Wolverine, and Danger. Storm commands wind and lightning, Magik blends sorcery with her Soulsword, Wolverine returns with his Adamantium claws, and Danger appears as the autonomous AI of the Danger Room in physical form.

The narrative explores familiar tensions between mutants and humanity, framing the team’s mission around protecting a world that often fears and rejects them.

Episode Mode Blends Comics and Manga

Beyond competitive play, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will feature an Episode Mode that reimagines Marvel storytelling through a hybrid of American comics and Japanese manga influences.

The mode presents its story as motion comics built around newly illustrated manga panels, with full voice acting available in ten languages. Arc System Works has also collaborated with a writer from the original Marvel comics to shape the scenario and worldbuilding.

On PlayStation 5, the experience will support spatial audio and utilise DualSense features to add tactile feedback to story moments. The aim is to create a narrative format distinct from both film and traditional comics, tailored specifically for an interactive fighting game.
