Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons Disconnection Issues Linked to HDMI Cable

With the Nintendo Switch 2 continuing to expand into new markets and prompting players to consider where to allocate their spending, it is not without its issues. A lacklustre launch lineup aside, it seems that many have been reporting random Joy-Cons disconnection problems as well.

A majority of the reports have surfaced on Reddit, with disconnections occurring every few minutes to even seconds, much to the frustration of players trying to enjoy their shiny new consoles.

The frustration largely stems from having something entirely new start exhibiting problems, primarily when it affects your ability to start and play the games you want to. However, it turns out that the problem is relatively easy to solve.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Disconnection Problems

The common thread that ties everyone affected together is due to the fact that they are using the wrong HDMI cable. Instead of using the bundled HDMI cable that comes with the Nintendo Switch 2, many are likely to have used the original Switch’s one that is connected to your television, or any other HDMI cables lying around.

Using the wrong HDMI cable is the root of the Joy-Con problems. The cable that comes with the new console is of the ultra-high-speed variety, unlike the HDMI cable used for the first console or any other cables you currently have.

With the right HDMI cable used, users have reported that they no longer face the same disconnecting issue. Why this is the case is still not clear, but Nintendo itself are well aware, sharing on its official support page the following information:

Confirm that you’re using an “Ultra High Speed” HDMI cable to connect the dock to the TV. If it’s not Ultra High Speed, your console won’t perform as expected when docked.

If you’re using a different cable than the one that came with the console, it should have printed on the cable that it’s “Ultra High Speed.”

The HDMI cable that came with the Nintendo Switch is not “Ultra High Speed” and should not be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock.

For the best time with your Nintendo Switch 2, be sure to use the components that came with it so you have one less worry on your mind.
