Veteran gamers who grew up with the first generation of handheld consoles surely remember how battery issues were always a significant consideration. The advancement of technology brought rechargeable batteries as a solution for many devices, but they still require extra care to maintain their longevity. Now, Nintendo is planning to address this with a new feature in the upcoming Switch 2.
Not only will the Nintendo Switch 2 offer stronger performance compared to its predecessor, but the gaming company is also set to introduce a new option aimed at extending battery life. This feature, as reported by Nintendo Today!, allows users to prevent the device from charging its battery to a full 100%. If activated, the charging process will automatically stop at a maximum of 90%.
Although this setting may slightly reduce handheld gameplay time, it is designed for those prioritising battery lifespan. The Nintendo Switch 2 will utilise a 5220mAh lithium-ion battery, and this feature serves as a protective measure to enhance its durability. Such options are not entirely new, as many modern portable devices, including smartphones, have started implementing similar features to preserve battery health.

Interestingly, this feature will also remain active while using the Nintendo Switch 2 in docked mode. Given that the dock also functions as a charger, the charging process will still halt before reaching 100%, aiming for the same goal of improved battery life.
Battery concerns surrounding the console have been discussed, especially with its reportedly shorter battery life than the first-generation model. Depending on the game being played, the handheld mode on Switch 2 is estimated to last between 2 to 6.5 hours on a full charge. With the new charging limit option, players who prioritise long-term durability over immediate playtime may find this feature to be a worthwhile addition.
Nintendo’s proactive approach with the Switch 2’s battery management showcases its commitment to enhancing user experience and product longevity, aligning with modern expectations for smart charging solutions in portable gaming.
