Paranormasight Returns With The Mermaid’s Curse
Square Enix has officially unveiled Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse, a new entry in its cult horror visual novel series. The announcement came during last week’s Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, surprising fans who had been quietly hoping for the franchise’s return.
Serving as a sequel to 2023’s Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo, the new title introduces an entirely original storyline, a fresh cast of characters, and hints of expanded gameplay mechanics. While it builds on the foundation of the first game, Square Enix has confirmed it can be enjoyed as a standalone experience.
A New Curse In Showa-Era Japan
Like its predecessor, Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse blends psychological horror and investigative mystery. Players piece together the truth behind supernatural “curses” by shifting perspectives among multiple characters, guided by an unsettling, enigmatic narrator.
The story centres on Yuza Minakuchi, a young pearl diver living on an island in the Ise-Shima region of Mie Prefecture. A routine dive quickly spirals into a supernatural encounter, pulling Yuza into a dangerous web surrounding the legendary Mermaid’s Curse.
As events unfold, Yuza crosses paths with other individuals tied to the curse, each hiding their own motives and secrets. The branching narrative structure promises tension-driven decision-making, where survival may hinge on reading between the lines.
Familiar Structure With Subtle Evolution
Staying true to the visual novel format, gameplay focuses on dialogue-driven investigation. Players converse with characters, gather clues, and carefully navigate scenarios to avoid deadly curse triggers.
However, the trailer hints at refinements to how information is processed and how supernatural threats are handled. The series has always thrived on forcing players to think laterally, and The Mermaid’s Curse appears ready to deepen that tension.

The setting once again uses real-world Japanese locations, recreated with 360-degree panoramic backdrops. Combined with detailed period authenticity and the integration of folklore, the Showa-era atmosphere remains a defining strength of the series.
Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse launches on February 19 for Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS and Android. Pre-orders are now live across all platforms.
