Report Claims Sony Plans to Close Bluepoint Games
Bluepoint Games, one of PlayStation Studios’ most respected remake specialists, may be facing closure. According to a Bloomberg report, Sony plans to shut down the Texas-based studio next month following an internal business review.
Roughly 70 employees are expected to be affected if the decision proceeds. At the time of writing, Sony has not issued an official public statement confirming the report.
A Studio Defined by Remakes
Bluepoint built its reputation by modernising some of gaming’s most beloved titles. The studio handled Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, delivered a critically acclaimed remake of Shadow of the Colossus, and most notably rebuilt Demon’s Souls for the PlayStation 5 launch.
Sony formally acquired Bluepoint in 2021, capitalising on the studio’s momentum and technical credibility. For years, Bluepoint Games was widely regarded as PlayStation’s go-to partner for high-end remakes and remasters.
The report also reminded us that Bluepoint had been developing a live-service project set in the God of War universe. The assignment aligned with Sony’s broader push into live-service games, an initiative aimed at diversifying long-term revenue streams.
That project was reportedly cancelled in January 2025. Following its cancellation, Bluepoint is said to have spent the past year defining its next direction under PlayStation Studios. Despite internal support, the studio allegedly struggled to secure a new greenlit project.
Industry Reaction and Uncertainty
The reported closure has already sparked strong reactions across social media. Many players have pointed to Bluepoint Games’ consistent technical execution and preservation work, arguing that its expertise in high-quality remakes would be difficult to replace.
Until Sony provides formal confirmation, the future remains uncertain. If the report proves accurate, it would mark a significant shift within PlayStation Studios and signal further consolidation following the industry’s broader wave of restructuring.
