Sony May Be Planning a Cross-Buy System for PlayStation and PC

Gaming is becoming increasingly expensive, and with rising prices across major platforms, players are seeking ways to stretch their budget further. Cross-buy capabilities — where a single purchase grants access to a game across multiple platforms — have long been a rare but welcome feature in the industry.

Microsoft has championed the concept through its Play Anywhere initiative, allowing shared ownership between Xbox and PC. Now, it seems Sony PlayStation may be exploring a similar direction.

Prominent leaker Billbil-kun recently revealed that dataminers uncovered a new cross-buy icon buried in the backend. According to their findings, the icon was quietly added around June 2025.

While Sony has yet to comment officially, its inclusion suggests that the company is at least testing or preparing the groundwork for a cross-platform feature.

What This Could Mean for Consumers

Billbil-kun outlined two main possibilities for how such a feature could work:

PlayStation–PC Integration

Sony could allow players to purchase a game once and access it on both PS5 and PC, echoing Microsoft’s model. This would mark a significant evolution for Sony’s PC strategy, which has steadily expanded with ports of titles like God of War, Horizon Forbidden West, and Ghost of Tsushima.

Compatibility with New Hardware

Another theory points to Sony’s rumoured next-gen or handheld device. In this scenario, the feature would ensure that players who own a PS5 copy could automatically play the same title on the upcoming hardware, adding substantial value to Sony’s ecosystem.

No Official Confirmation Yet

Sony has not announced or acknowledged the feature, leaving its purpose and release window unclear. It’s possible that cross-buy could debut with a new device or arrive as part of a broader PSN update.

If real, the system could represent a significant consumer-friendly step for Sony, especially as it leans further into multi-platform publishing. In an era where players expect more value from every purchase, this possible addition could become one of PlayStation’s most welcome new features yet.
