Project Windless Lands on PlayStation 5
Krafton Montréal Studio has officially unveiled Project Windless, a new open-world action RPG currently in development for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.
Revealed with a debut trailer at State of Play, the title draws direct inspiration from the acclaimed Korean fantasy novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears, signalling a bold move into darker, less traditional fantasy territory for the studio.
Rather than adapting the novels directly, Project Windless explores events set more than a thousand years before the original storyline, positioning itself as a foundational chapter in the wider universe.
A Dark Fantasy World Rooted in Korean Literature
The Bird That Drinks Tears is widely recognised for its unconventional approach to fantasy, presenting morally complex races and conflicts shaped by tragedy rather than clear-cut heroism.
Project Windless aims to translate that tone into an expansive open world where players can freely explore, uncover hidden histories, and influence the fate of a divided land on the brink of upheaval.
Players step into the role of a Rekon, a nomadic warrior race of humanoid birds known for their immense size, strength, and combat prowess. Beyond their physical dominance, the Rekons are characterised by solitude, personal conviction, and vulnerabilities that shape their worldview.
By centring the experience around this race, Krafton Montréal Studio is building a protagonist who is powerful yet flawed, reinforcing the human drama embedded in the source material.
Open-World Freedom and Large-Scale Warfare
Project Windless is designed with minimal hand-holding, encouraging players to chart their own path through exploration, alliances, and large-scale conflict. Rather than guiding players step by step, the world is structured to reward curiosity and risk-taking.
Combat forms a central pillar of the experience. As a Rekon warrior, players will engage in one-versus-many battles against swarming enemies powered by large-scale crowd systems. These are not static hordes. Enemies react dynamically, flank, and surround, transforming each encounter into a fluid battlefield.

In addition to cutting through waves of foes, players will also confront towering creatures that dominate encounters, demanding quick thinking and tactical adaptation.
Shaping a Forgotten Era
By exploring a largely untouched period in the series’ timeline, Project Windless sees itself as a formative chapter in the birth of a new kingdom within this universe.
While a release window has not yet been confirmed, the project is actively in development for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. More details on gameplay systems, story beats, and release timing are expected at a later date.
