Ratatan, Spiritual Successor to Patapon, Hits Steam Early Access This September

Rhythm Games Make a Comeback

Rhythm games have always had a devoted fanbase, combining the challenge of keeping to the beat with immersive visuals and soundscapes. While the genre has quieted in recent years, Ratata Arts is aiming for a triumphant return with Ratatan — a spiritual successor to the beloved Patapon series.

Originally announced during Summer Game Fest for a July release, Ratatan will now launch in Steam Early Access on September 19. The updated release date was revealed on August 7 during an exclusive Ratatan Play Session event in Tokyo.

Two New Worlds Revealed

The Tokyo event wasn’t just about the release date. The development team also unveiled two new playable worlds:

  • Jam Jammer Jungle Journey – A dense jungle where “the ruins of ancient drums lie hidden” among swamps and dangerous wildlife. Deep within, the evil priestess Tolja So prepares an arcane ritual to resurrect a dark god.
  • Frozen Flower Fantasia – Once a garden of eternal spring, this land is now frozen under the control of the icy Glaciera and her loyal followers.

Both locations promise fresh challenges, enemies, and unique rhythm-driven encounters.

Community and Post-Launch Plans

A special livestream hosted by voice actor Tomokazu Sugita will take place on September 14, just ahead of the Early Access launch. The stream will share more gameplay updates, outline the post-launch roadmap, and tease additional activations.

Producer Kazuto Sakajiri expressed gratitude to fans, stating:

“To everyone who joined us at the event and all those supporting us online — thank you so much. With the Early Access version, we’ll be incorporating your feedback to make Ratatan even better. Let’s make this world an amazing one together.”

When and Where to Play

Ratatan launches on Steam Early Access on September 19. Early adopters will be able to influence the game’s direction directly, making this one of the most community-driven rhythm game releases in recent years.
