Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Mobile Game

With one of the most complex overarching plots, Square Enix‘s magical Kingdom Hearts franchise has certainly built up a loyal following. That means the hunger for new content is real, and the company has continued to add more layers to its intricate narrative. This includes the canonical mobile title, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, which was announced back in 2022.

The gameplay concept itself was intriguing. Seemingly inspired by the success of Pokémon GO at the time, Missing-Link was designed as a role-playing game incorporating smart device GPS technology, blending real-world elements into the experience.

However, after long periods of silence and a delay announced back in 2024, Square Enix has now decided to cease development on the still-mysterious mobile game. The bad news was delivered on X/Twitter.

Despite the effort poured into the project, Square Enix acknowledged that it would be impossible for them to create a live-service game that would satisfy players at this point. Rather than forcing the project forward, the team decided that it was prudent to cancel Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link outright.

“The Kingdom Hearts series will continue. We are hard at work on Kingdom Hearts IV, and hope you’ll continue to support the series as you keep an eye out for further updates,” Square Enix shared. As a result of this cancellation, the Kingdom Hearts series will now be solely focused on its mainline entry: Kingdom Hearts IV, directed by Tetsuya Nomura. Unfortunately, this title is yet to share any new information following its brief teaser that piqued fans’ curiosity a few years ago.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was originally planned for release on Android and iOS mobile platforms. With its cancellation, all eyes now turn to Kingdom Hearts IV, as fans await the next chapter in the saga.
