Square Enix May Be Developing Dragon Quest IV–VI Remakes, Creator Teases

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii hints Square Enix is remaking Dragon Quest IV–VI, not just VII Reimagined.

Yuji Horii Hints at Dragon Quest IV–VI Remakes Amid Franchise Revival

Square Enix has made clear its commitment to reviving the Dragon Quest series, with remakes and new entries being developed side by side. While fans are looking ahead to Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, the reveal of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined raised eyebrows for skipping over earlier games in the series. Now, creator Yuji Horii has shed light on the unusual order — and offered hints about what may come next.

Development Order, Not Preference

Speaking on a podcast, Horii explained that VII Reimagined was announced first simply because its development finished earlier than other projects.

He emphasised that multiple titles are currently in development simultaneously, leading fans to speculate that remakes of Dragon Quest IV–VI may already be underway. While not a direct confirmation, the comment has been widely interpreted as a strong clue.

What Future Remakes Might Look Like

The approach may differ depending on the entry. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is being developed in full 3D, a departure from the HD-2D style used in the Dragon Quest I–III Remakes. Should IV–VI follow this 3D direction, players could see reimaginings that remain faithful to the originals’ structure but benefit from modern visuals, quality-of-life features, and more dynamic combat systems.

Square Enix’s Bigger RPG Strategy

The possible return of the beloved series fits Square Enix’s broader RPG revival strategy, which seeks to reintroduce classic entries while maintaining excitement for new projects. Alongside XII, the company is positioning the franchise to remain relevant to both long-time fans and first-time players.

For now, Square Enix has not confirmed any new projects beyond Horii’s comments. But expectations are already mounting that the rumoured remakes will join the publisher’s growing slate of classic revivals.
