StarCraft’s Future Under Microsoft
Since Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, speculation has swirled around the fate of Blizzard’s long-dormant franchises. Among them, StarCraft stands out as one of the most iconic real-time strategy series ever made, particularly given its cultural impact in South Korea.
Xbox chief Phil Spencer has previously expressed enthusiasm about revisiting classic Blizzard properties. For many fans, that was enough to spark hope of a full-scale revival for the legendary RTS. However, the latest report suggests that the return may not resemble the traditional RTS formula that defined the franchise.
Nexon Reportedly Developing a New StarCraft Project
According to South Korean outlet DNews, Blizzard is said to be collaborating with Nexon on a new StarCraft-related project. The report cites unnamed sources described as reliable and familiar with the matter.
What has drawn the most attention is the division reportedly handling development. The project is allegedly being managed by Nexon’s Shooter Headquarters, the internal team behind action-driven titles such as Sudden Attack. This has fuelled speculation that the new entry could be a shooter set within the franchise’s universe rather than a strategy game.
Given the broader industry shift toward persistent online experiences, some analysts believe the project may also adopt a live service model, though this remains unconfirmed.

Development Allegedly in Early Stages
The same report claims that Nexon Games has already begun assembling a dedicated team for the project and that recruitment efforts are underway. It is further suggested that Choi Jun Ho, known within the community as a respected modder from the game’s earlier era, has been appointed as lead planner.
Despite that, development is reportedly still in an early prototype phase. The team is said to be focusing on building a solid internal concept while assessing the project’s long-term commercial viability.
Neither Blizzard nor Nexon has publicly commented on the report.
A Different Kind of StarCraft?
If accurate, the rumour would represent a significant shift for the franchise. StarCraft has long been synonymous with competitive RTS gameplay, esports prestige and strategic depth. A move into the shooter space would echo Blizzard’s earlier experimentation with StarCraft Ghost, a cancelled third-person action project from the early 2000s.
For now, fans will need to treat the report cautiously. Until an official announcement is made, the future remains speculative. What is clear, however, is that interest in seeing the franchise return has not faded.
