Ghost of Yotei Will Feel Less Repetitive as Sucker Punch Learns from Tsushima

Sucker Punch will address the repetitive feel of Tsushima, particularly in terms of mini-games, in Ghost of Yotei.

After months of speculation and silence, the veil had finally been lifted on Ghost of Yotei, the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, during Sony’s recent State of Play showcase. The presentation revealed a glimpse of the new protagonist, Atsu, along with a variety of new weapons and breathtaking landscapes.

While the return to an open-world setting is undoubtedly exciting, it also revives concerns over one of the original game’s most criticised elements: repetitive gameplay. Fortunately, developer Sucker Punch is fully aware of the issue.

In a recent interview with Japanese gaming outlet Automaton, co-directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell addressed this concern directly. They openly admitted that Ghost of Tsushima suffered from a lack of variety in certain gameplay aspects, most notably, its mini-games.

Nate Fox cited the fox shrine activity as a particularly problematic example. While charming at first, the activity quickly became monotonous, lacking variation and turning into more of a chore than an enjoyable part of exploration.

Changes to Ghost of Yotei Activities

Taking player feedback to heart, Sucker Punch has promised to overhaul this system in Ghost of Yotei. Their goal is clear: to make the overall experience feel more dynamic and less like a repetitive checklist.

The mini-games in Ghost of Yotei will now offer greater variety and depth. Players will no longer be required to complete the same tasks repeatedly. Instead, exploration will be met with more meaningful and unexpected rewards, making the act of venturing into the world feel rewarding and exciting.

Sucker Punch emphasised their belief that the core joy of an open-world game lies in exploration. With Ghost of Yotei, they aim to deliver a more diverse and satisfying experience that surpasses the expectations of both returning fans and newcomers.

Ghost of Yotei is scheduled to launch on October 2, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
