Summer Game Fest - Drinkbox Studios Reveals Blighted, a Psychedelic Metroidvania Nightmare

For fans of the Metroidvania genre, there have been so many different takes that cater to all sorts of adventures. Players are always spoilt for choice, and we are getting one more option as Drinkbox Studios has revealed its next project, Blighted, at Summer Game Fest.

Here’s the official breakdown of the game:

In the past, the dead were buried with seeds planted in their brains. These seeds would grow into trees, surrounding the player’s village. The fruit from these trees was special, it contained the memories of the dead. Knowledge and traditions were passed along through this fruit for generations.

This continued until the one called Sorcisto defiled the ritual. By eating brains raw, he gained vast power and knowledge. He consumed the player’s entire village, destroyed its memory forest, and infected the world with a deadly Blight.

The experience the studio gained from both Guacamelee! and Nobody Saves the World will be put to good use. This will be a brand-new Metroidvania action role-playing game that allows both co-op and solo play, where players must fight their way through a psychedelic western nightmare to reclaim the memories of their people.

It won’t be easy, of course, but you can always tap into the power of the Blight as you defeat enemies, and the world will change along the way. Expect combat encounters to be twisted and transformed, hidden paths to be uncovered, and more interesting things to look forward to.

Blighted is our largest and most ambitious game to date. We’ve been building on the experience from creating our past games, while also experimenting with many new ideas,” shared Graham Smith, producer and co-founder at Drinkbox Studios. “We’re working hard towards finishing development of Blighted, and we’re excited to finally reveal it to the world!”

Drinkbox Studios is aiming for a 2026 release for Blighted on PC and consoles.
