Summer Game Fest - Fearsome Foes Showcased in New Onimusha: Way of the Sword Trailer

The Onimusha franchise is making a concerted effort with a comeback, and I am all for it. While fans can dive into the past with the Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny remaster, there’s also a brand new adventure to look forward to with Onimusha: Way of the Sword. A new trailer at Summer Game Fest gives us a closer look at some of the adversaries that are in the way of hero Miyamoto Musashi.

There are the Genma, of course, but the trailer from Capcom spotlights a particular individual who also uses the legendary Oni Gauntlet in Sasaki Ganryu. An equally formidable swordsman, he will likely play an essential role during the main storyline in either aiding or stopping Musashi, or somewhere in between. How the Oni Gauntlet comes into play will be something for players to discover.

At the end of the trailer, we also catch a glimpse of a mysterious glowing woman, who appears to have materialised from Musashi’s gauntlet. Who is this individual, and what are her ties to the overall lore and narrative? We have so many questions, and hopefully, we will get more answers soon.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword will have combat as its centrepiece, and rightfully so. As seen in the trailer, Musashi cuts down enemies with ease, including utilising the powerful Issen counterattack that instantly eliminates a foe. Similar to previous titles, our hero will also be able to wield different weapons, including dual hammers.

As for the world, it seems we won’t be confined to ancient Japan’s Kyoto. Here, we see floating ruins, massive structures, and an otherworldly energy that permeates this particular location. With Genma involved, things can get messy really quickly.

Speaking of the demons, we see two of them that players will meet during the adventure. There is the floating Kubi Akari, a familiar enemy that likes to suck up souls and being a general menace, and then there is the towering Daidara. A monstrous being that wields a giant club, it will take some effort in order to cut it down to size.

For all that has been shown, it is shaping up to be a grand comeback for the series, and we simply cannot wait to get our hands on a game that looks great, and hopefully, plays well too.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026.
