Summer Game Fest - Stranger Than Heaven is Rgg Studio's Historical Mystery Game

With Summer Game Fest now fully in motion, plenty of new announcements and reveals have already been shown. The likes of Resident Evil Requiem were more or less expected, but there is still room for surprises. One will be Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s mysterious game that was revealed at The Game Awards last year under the codename Project Century. We now know that it’s called Stranger Than Heaven.

Back then, we knew very little about the game, with only snippets shown. Even with this latest trailer, there is still so much we do not know and so many more questions we have. Nonetheless, it helps illustrate the kind of experience that the developers are going for.

The combat is expected to be as intense and hard-hitting, just like the Like a Dragon games, but with more blood and brutality. There is even an option to show mercy to an opponent, which will be interesting to see how that translates into player choice. Everything else looks to be sleeker than what we expect as well.

There are also apparently time jumps within the game, at least from the two trailers shown thus far. The first was set in 1915, but the latest one seems to have brought us forward to 1943. The locations where the action takes place will likely give us a better clue, but it’s hard to pin down just where Stranger Than Heaven is taking place.

At least the main character is staying true to parts of the game’s title, with Mako Daito fronting the game for now. His strange blue eyes and demeanour point to a larger mystery at play, and how he and other characters figure into the story could make for an adventure unlike any other.

Obviously, the game will not be historically accurate, but rather an alternate take on the past. It is evident from the cultural overlap of Japanese imagery with American motifs. How this will affect the game overall is something to look forward to as well, with fans ready to dive in with theories and the like.

Expect to see more about Stranger Than Heaven in the coming months.
