Nintendo Criticised for Withholding Switch 2 Dev Kits From Developers
An Unusual Next-Gen Strategy
As the gaming industry prepares for the arrival of Nintendo’s highly anticipated Switch 2, questions are mounting over how the company is handling its developer relations. Traditionally, console manufacturers provide wide access to developer kits (dev kits) to ensure a robust launch lineup. Sony and Microsoft have long prioritised this approach, granting early access to both indie and AAA developers.
However, according to multiple reports, Nintendo appears to be taking a more restrictive stance.
Digital Foundry Raises Concerns
The latest scrutiny comes from Digital Foundry, who at Gamescom 2025 spoke to a range of developers about Switch 2 access. Their findings suggested that Nintendo has been “stingy” with distribution, with many studios — including established AAA developers — struggling to secure kits.
In some cases, studios reportedly had requests denied and were advised instead to focus on the original Switch. With backwards compatibility expected, Nintendo suggests that these games will still run on the new console, albeit without optimisation.
Indies and AAA Developers Left in Limbo
Curiously, Digital Foundry noted that while larger studios face delays, some smaller indie teams have received dev kits. The criteria for allocation remain unclear, leading to frustration across the development community.
This selective approach risks creating uncertainty for third-party support, particularly as the industry waits to see how Nintendo plans to compete against rivals with extensive next-gen libraries.
No Word From Nintendo
Digital Foundry has declined to name specific studios due to confidentiality, but their findings have sparked debate across the industry. For now, Nintendo has not issued any official statement regarding its distribution policy.
With the Switch 2 already launched, concerns about limited developer access could grow louder if Nintendo does not clarify its strategy soon. Developers and fans alike are eager for reassurance that the console will be supported with a strong and varied lineup.
