Tears of Metal Targets Spring 2026 Early Access

Montreal-based studio Paper Cult, makers of the excellent Bloodroots, has confirmed that its medieval hack and slash roguelike Tears of Metal will launch in Early Access on Steam in Spring 2026.

The announcement arrives alongside a brand-new gameplay trailer, offering a closer look at the game’s large-scale horde combat and introducing a new playable character. Tears of Metal currently has a demo already available for players eager to sample the action.

Ruadh Stonecrusher Joins the Battlefield

The latest trailer spotlights Ruadh Stonecrusher, a hammer-wielding hero capable of smashing through dense enemy waves. Armed with a colossal weapon, Stonecrusher’s playstyle appears focused on crowd control and raw impact, carving open paths through chaotic battlefields.

The footage also teases expanded character customisation, hinting at deeper build variety when the game enters Early Access, with more to come in the future.

A Medieval Roguelike Built Around Horde Combat

Tears of Metal blends hack and slash combat with roguelike progression in a medieval setting. Players lead a Scottish battalion across sprawling battlefields to reclaim an island overrun by invaders following the mysterious Dragon Stone Meteor event.

Each run allows players to combine powerful upgrades with more than one hundred artefacts, creating distinctive builds and increasingly explosive attacks. Multiple playable heroes are planned, with permanent progression systems that allow soldiers to gain skills between campaigns.

Between runs, players can expand their settlement to unlock new shops, permanent upgrades and optional challenges offering greater rewards.

Solo or Co-Op Campaign

Paper Cult has designed Tears of Metal for both solo and co-operative play. The game features over 45 handcrafted environments, with dynamic objectives and shifting enemy encounters designed to keep each campaign fresh.
