A New Adventure Announced at The Game Awards 2025

Wildflower Interactive, the independent studio founded by Bruce Straley of The Last of Us and Uncharted fame, has officially revealed its debut project: Coven of the Chicken Foot. Announced during The Game Awards 2025, the title introduces an emotionally rich, creature-driven puzzle-platformer set in a fantasy world that bends familiar adventure tropes into something more personal and strange.

The announcement trailer highlights a tone that is equal parts whimsical and unsettling, focusing on the unlikely partnership between an elderly witch named Gertie and a mysterious creature bound to her by oath. While the heroes of legend have already moved on, the game reframes what heroism can look like from the margins of the fantasy genre.

Straley describes the project as an opportunity to push interactive storytelling forward through a smaller, creatively experimental team after decades of defining AAA narratives.

A Witch, a Creature and a Relationship at the Centre

Unlike traditional fantasy protagonists, Gertie is not a sword-swinging warrior or nimble platforming hero. She survives instead through patience, intuition and collaboration with her creature companion. Together, they venture through decaying dungeons, dense forests, torch-lit caves and the ruins of fallen champions while piecing together a deeper mystery tied to their oath.

Wildflower Interactive emphasises that the heart of the game is the evolving relationship between Gertie and her non-playable ally. Built using proprietary companion technology, the creature reacts to the player’s behaviour, adapts its abilities and develops new motivations as the journey progresses. This system reshapes traversal, puzzle-solving and emotional decision-making over time.

The narrative in Coven of the Chicken Foot unfolds without spoken dialogue. Players interpret gestures, environments and quiet choices to understand the story’s darker undertones beneath its storybook surface.

A New Vision for Companion-Led Storytelling

The game represents what Straley calls the next evolution of companion-driven storytelling, following lessons he and his colleagues learned while designing relationships in The Last of Us and Uncharted. The studio aims to prove that small teams can still push the medium’s emotional boundaries through focused design and experimentation.

Straley describes Wildflower Interactive as a studio built on artistic freedom and creative risk. In the reveal, he shared that the game blends old-school simplicity with modern narrative ambition, offering players a fresh take on the puzzle-platformer genre, anchored in character connection rather than combat.

Coven of the Chicken Foot is currently in development for PC via Steam, with wishlisting now available.
