A Long-Teased Reveal Finally Confirmed on the TGA Stage

After weeks of speculation and cryptic imagery, Larian Studios was on hand at The Game Awards 2025 to officially reveal its next major project: a new Divinity game.

The announcement resolves a wave of fan theories sparked by a mysterious skull-covered statue teased by Geoff Keighley and a series of newly registered trademarks that hinted at the franchise’s return.

The reveal marks Larian’s first major announcement since the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, and the studio made clear that this new project represents its most ambitious undertaking yet. Studio founder Swen Vincke described the game as the largest title Larian has ever attempted, surpassing even the scale of BG3.

Larian’s Biggest Game Ever, Built on Lessons From Baldur’s Gate 3

While Larian did not show extended gameplay, the initial teaser for Divinity emphasised the scope of the project. Vincke reiterated that the studio is applying everything it learned during the development of BG3, from narrative design to systemic RPG mechanics, while also returning to the tone and heart of the universe.

Importantly, the new title is not a continuation of Divinity: Original Sin specifically. Instead, it appears to draw from the broader lore, allowing Larian to experiment with structure and gameplay systems without repeating its previous formula. The studio hinted at more expansive environments, deeper character agency and complex party dynamics that build on the foundations BG3 popularised.

Vincke noted that Larian has been growing both in team size and technological capability, positioning the new Divinity game as a flagship title designed to define the next era of the studio’s storytelling ambitions.

The Skull Statue Mystery Explained

The reveal also put an end to one of the year’s more amusing pre-show puzzles. A bizarre, handcrafted statue placed in a California desert has led to widespread speculation about potential connections to DiabloGod of WarDOOM, or even The Elder Scrolls VI.

Trademark filings later pointed increasingly toward Larian, and the TGA reveal confirmed that the statue was part of a coordinated lead-up campaign. Fans have praised the studio for the theatrical tease, which played into Larian’s penchant for playful marketing and misdirection.

More details on the new Divinity title will be released throughout 2026, with Larian stating that it intends to show gameplay only when it is fully ready.
