Casey Hudson Returns to the Old Republic Era With Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic
A New Story Revealed From the Director of KOTOR
At The Game Awards 2025, Arcanaut Studios unveiled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a narrative-driven single-player action RPG developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.
The project is led by Casey Hudson, the game director behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. The announcement arrived with a short teaser trailer that marked the beginning of a new chapter in a fan-favourite era of the Star Wars universe.
Hudson described the project as a spiritual successor to KOTOR, informed by decades of advances in role-playing design, narrative systems and cinematic storytelling. Rather than retelling established canon, Fate of the Old Republic introduces an entirely new narrative set during a period when the galaxy is poised for profound transformation. Players step into the role of a Force user whose choices shape a path toward either the light or the dark.
Arcanaut Studios, founded by Hudson, brings together former BioWare veterans and new talent to deliver character-driven stories with significant player agency. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is positioned as the studio’s flagship project.
A Fresh Journey Through a Reborn Galaxy
Although full gameplay details remain under wraps, Arcanaut and Lucasfilm Games confirmed that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic blends branching storytelling with fast-paced action combat. Players will explore a galaxy in the early stages of rebirth, encounter new allies and adversaries and uncover mysteries linked to the broader Old Republic era.
Hudson explained that working on KOTOR had been one of the defining experiences of his career and that the game offers an opportunity to build something entirely new, drawing on lessons learned since. The team aims to deliver an adventure built on moral weight, character depth and the thematic conflict between light and darkness.
Early Development Underway for PC and Consoles

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is currently in early development for PC and consoles. No release window has been announced, though Arcanaut Studios has confirmed that more updates will be shared as production progresses.
For now, the teaser marks the return of Casey Hudson to one of the most iconic eras in Star Wars gaming, setting expectations high as the Old Republic enters a new generation.
