For some players, non-linear storytelling in games can be a source of confusion, as it requires careful attention to timelines that jump back and forth. Yet for others, it’s exactly this method of storytelling that fuels the intrigue, allowing for suspenseful reveals and surprising plot twists. This was especially true in The Last of Us Part II, which employed a shifting narrative structure to immerse players in the perspectives of both Ellie and Abby.
In a surprising move, Naughty Dog has released an unexpected update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, addressing players who may have found the original narrative format difficult to follow or prefer a more straightforward experience. Introducing Chronological Mode, a free update that allows players to experience the story as it unfolds in strict chronological order.
Rather than jumping between character viewpoints and different points in time, this mode reorders all narrative sequences, such as cutscenes, gameplay, and transitions, so they align with the actual timeline of events. This change provides a new perspective through which to view the emotional journey of its main characters, potentially offering deeper insight into the narrative for returning players.

Despite this new addition, Naughty Dog still recommends that first-time players experience the story through its original presentation, as it was carefully crafted to maximize emotional impact and narrative tension. The studio emphasised that creating Chronological Mode was no easy task, requiring significant effort to restructure the story flow without compromising the game’s integrity. Naughty Dog also acknowledged the valuable support they received from fellow Sony first-party studio, Nixxes, in making this mode a reality.
Alongside the Chronological Mode update, The Last of Us Part II Remastered also receives new cosmetic content to mark Naughty Dog’s 40th anniversary. Players can now equip Joel with a Nathan Drake outfit and Tommy with a Sam Drake costume, both iconic characters from Uncharted, in the game’s roguelike mode, No Return.
This update is a welcome surprise for longtime fans and a thoughtful way to celebrate Naughty Dog’s legacy while offering fresh ways to experience one of its most ambitious titles.
