Tiny Metal 2 Opens an April 2 to 29 Steam Playtest

AREA 35 is bringing Tiny Metal back with a limited Steam playtest for Tiny Metal 2, running from April 2 to April 29. It is the first hands-on opportunity for the series since 2019’s Full Metal Rumble, and the studio is positioning the test as a feedback round focused on balance, pacing, and core systems. Access is limited; sign-ups are available on the Steam playtest page.

The headline is co-op scale. The playtest includes single-player and local co-op, and showcases the sequel across larger maps and combined-arms battles on land, in the air, and, for the first time in the franchise, at sea. With Tiny Metal 2 targeting a Spring 2027 release, this playtest will give players an early taste.

Focus Fire and New Factions Shape the Combat Layer

Tiny Metal 2 is adding new faction options alongside returning factions, with the playtest allowing players to experiment with mixed unit loadouts built for different map conditions. The most notable new combat mechanic is Focus Fire, which lets multiple allied units combine attacks into a single simultaneous strike. The intent is clear: reward coordination and create more decisive tempo swings when positioning and timing are aligned.

In a tactics game, mechanics like this tend to reshape how players value unit placement and turn planning. If Focus Fire is tuned well, it can reduce grindy exchanges and create clearer turning points. If not, it risks becoming a snowball tool that ends matches too quickly. That makes it a sensible target for playtest feedback.

The other major addition is naval combat. Tiny Metal 2 introduces sea warfare with units such as battleships, destroyers, and submarines, expanding the combined arms identity beyond traditional ground and air dominance. This also implies more varied map design, with coastlines and open water lanes changing how players control space and respond to flanks.

For returning fans, the appeal is obvious: a new theatre that forces different unit mixes and planning assumptions. For newcomers, it makes the sequel easier to understand as a broader tactics package rather than a narrow tribute to classic grid-based war games.
