Video Game Nation Premieres November 8, Exploring the Heart of Singapore’s Gaming Creativity

Video Game Nation Shines a Spotlight on Singapore’s Indie Game Scene

Singapore’s indie gaming scene takes centre stage in Video Game Nation, an eight-part short-form documentary series by No Average Joe (NAJ). Premiering on November 8, the series dives into the creative grit, humour, and humanity behind the nation’s most distinctive video and tabletop game studios.

Produced under SGStory’s Our Singapore, Our Stories initiative commemorating 60 years of nationhood, Video Game Nation celebrates how Singaporean imagination has shaped games that reach far beyond local shores.

A Celebration of Underdogs and Innovation

Each episode — running between four and eight minutes — explores the challenges, triumphs, and quirks of the country’s indie developers. Presented in a vertical, social-first format for TikTok and Instagram, the series is divided into four themes, each spotlighting two studios.

Featured titles include beloved hits like Cat Quest III, the satirical Let’s Build a Dungeon, the stylish Chinatown Detective Agency, and the chaotic SEDAP!. Viewers will also meet developers of the games who blend global inspiration with distinctly Singaporean flavour.

Video Game Nation is really a collection of underdog stories,” said Joe Peter, Producer-Director and Executive Producer at NAJ. “Singapore-made games often only get noticed when they go global, but there are plenty more that thrive in their own ways. Games born here, shaped by the Singapore experience, built with equal parts creativity, grit, and heart.”

Exploring the Stories Behind the Code

From humble bedroom projects to international releases, the series chronicles how small teams are carving out a space in the global industry.

  • Heavy Hitters: The Gentlebros and Springloaded on building global followings with Singaporean flair.
  • Incredible Iterations: General Interactive and AT-AT Games on crafting cultural narratives through cyber-noir and Southeast Asian myth.
  • Coding Catharsis: Landshark Games and No Average Joe on how creativity can spring from frustration and introspection.
  • Makan Mana: Battlebrew Productions and kopiforge on using food, identity, and community as storytelling anchors.

The project is part of SGStory’s Our Singapore, Our Stories campaign, a national initiative by the Association of Independent Producers (AIPRO) and supported by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).

From pixel art to cultural storytelling, Video Game Nation captures the heart of Singapore’s growing creative economy, one that continues to punch above its weight in the global gaming landscape.
