Wolfenstein’s Place in Bethesda’s FPS Legacy
Alongside id Software, MachineGames has become one of Bethesda’s premier FPS developers. The Swedish studio revitalised Wolfenstein with The New Order and The New Colossus, delivering story-rich shooters that earned both critical acclaim and commercial success.
In 2024, MachineGames demonstrated its versatility with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a slower-paced but well-received adventure. With that project now complete, fans are eager to know what’s next — and whether BJ Blazkowicz will return.
A Trilogy Always in Mind
In a new NoClip documentary, studio head Jerk Gustafsson confirmed that the series was always envisioned as a trilogy. According to him, the team outlined BJ Blazkowicz’s full narrative arc, including events across the second and third entries, while still developing The New Order.
“BJ’s journey isn’t finished,” Gustafsson stressed, adding that MachineGames remains enthusiastic about returning to the franchise when the opportunity arises.
While Gustafsson’s remarks confirm interest in a third game, he avoided stating whether development is currently underway. This leaves the project’s status uncertain, though it signals that the series is far from abandoned.
For now, the decision lies with Bethesda and parent company Microsoft to greenlight the long-awaited conclusion.
Wolfenstein’s Recent History
The franchise’s most recent release was Wolfenstein: Youngblood, a spin-off co-developed with Arkane Studios. Its mixed reception left many fans eager for a return to BJ’s story-driven campaign.
If MachineGames follows through on its original trilogy plan, the studio could finally deliver the epic finale players have been waiting for.
