Microsoft Addresses Xbox Layoff Concerns
Microsoft has confirmed that no mass layoffs are planned at Xbox following the recent leadership shake-up within its gaming division.
The announcement comes after the sudden departure of long-time Xbox figurehead Phil Spencer and Xbox President Sarah Bond. Both had become closely associated with Microsoft’s gaming identity, making their exit a vital and significant moment for the brand.
With leadership now reportedly shifting toward executives with stronger ties to Microsoft’s AI division, speculation quickly emerged that restructuring could lead to workforce reductions.
Booty Offers Reassurance
Those concerns were addressed by newly promoted Chief Content Officer Matt Booty:
“My focus is on supporting the teams and leaders we have in place and creating the conditions for them to do their best work. To be clear, there are no organizational changes underway for our studios.”
According to Booty, the current restructuring does not include plans for mass layoffs. While organisational changes are underway, Microsoft Gaming is not pursuing large-scale workforce reductions as part of this transition.
The clarification offers stability during what could otherwise have been a turbulent period.

Stability for First-Party Studios
The reassurance is particularly significant for Microsoft’s first-party network for Xbox, which includes studios under the Bethesda and Activision Blizzard banners.
With a major 2026 release slate reportedly in development, including high-profile titles such as Forza Horizon 6 and Fable, maintaining operational continuity is crucial.
For now, Microsoft appears focused on navigating its leadership transition without disrupting its development pipeline, signalling that the company intends to pursue strategic change without immediate cost-cutting measures affecting staff.
