Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties Faces Early Criticism Over Visual Downgrade Concerns

RGG Studio responds to negative feedback on Yakuza Kiwami 3’s demo visuals, confirming a day-one patch to fix lighting and visual issues before launch.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 Demo Draws Criticism Ahead of Launch

Choosing the Kiwami label instead of simply calling these projects remakes has proven to be a smart long-term strategy for SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. After two previous such releases, players have developed a clear understanding of what that branding represents.

At this point, Kiwami no longer signals only higher resolution assets. It carries expectations of modernised gameplay, refined systems, and, in some cases, expanded story content that strengthens the original narrative. That context makes the response to the Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties demo particularly notable, as early impressions from fans have been sharply negative.

Visual Quality Comes Under Fire

Much of the criticism has focused on the demo’s visual presentation. Players have voiced concerns that the remake fails to meet the standard set by previous entries, with some even claiming that the original PlayStation 3 version of Yakuza 3 appears more convincing in direct comparison.

Rather than feeling like a clear upgrade, the demo has left fans questioning whether the remake meaningfully improves on its source material, especially given the expectations attached to the Kiwami branding.

Kubochi River Identified as the Main Problem Area

A large portion of the backlash centres on the Kubochi River area in Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties. According to player feedback, the lighting in this section is excessively bright, flattening the scene and stripping away the grounded atmosphere the series is known for. Water surfaces and environmental assets are particularly affected, resulting in visuals that many describe as unnatural and unfinished.

For a franchise celebrated for its attention to environmental detail, Kubochi River has quickly become a focal point for concern.

RGG Studio Confirms Day One Patch

RGG Studio responded swiftly to the criticism. In an official statement, the developer confirmed that the demo does not represent the final visual quality of Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties. A day one update, Patch 1.11, is already planned and will specifically address the lighting and visual issues affecting Kubochi River.

RGG also noted that the patch will include additional refinements beyond that area, although further details have not yet been shared.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is scheduled to launch on February 12, 2026, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
