Sony’s ambition to bring more of its flagship games into the realm of film and television has been apparent for quite some time now. Several titles are already being adapted, including God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn. Now, there is more news about another adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch Productions aside from the film.
Ghost of Tsushima was confirmed at CES 2025 to be receiving an anime series adaptation titled Ghost of Tsushima: Legends that will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. As the name suggests, it will involve both the main game as well as the multiplayer game mode that was a later addition.
The official description reads:
The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan—until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But honorable tactics won’t lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting—the way of the Ghost—as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.
The gameplay of Ghost of Tsushima definitely lends itself well to the world of animation. The swift action and narrative make for a complementary concoction that should capture the imagination of fans and newcomers alike. Throw in the more supernatural aspects of the Legends mode, and it is more likely to succeed.
This anime project is a collaboration between Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions. Takanobu Mizuno (Star Wars: Visions – The Duel) will serve as the director for this adaptation, with Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass, Thunderbolt Fantasy) as the writer, and Kamikaze Douga handling the animation production.
“Having already proven the immense quality and versatility of our gaming properties across multiple successful film and television projects, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our first ever anime adaptation,” explained Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. “Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series.”
“The Ghost of Tsushima anime will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking,” added Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll.
Ghost of Tsushima is currently available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. Meanwhile, Sucker Punch Productions is also busy working on the latest entry in the series — Ghost of Yotei, which is expected to launch in 2025.
