Gundam Live-action Adapatation Announced, Now in Full Production

The popularity of the Mobile Suit Gundam IP is undeniable. From the actual models to video games and anime, the fanbase has only grown throughout the years through different avenues. But when it comes to live-action adaptations, there has not been a successful attempt yet. However, Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Entertainment are trying to change that narrative with a new film adaptation, tentatively titled GUNDAM.

Jim Mickle, showrunner of Netflix’s hit series Sweet Tooth, has been tasked as the director and writer. Together with the announcement was a teaser poster confirming the start of the co-production. Unfortunately, no other details were shared, so we have no idea what the story will be based on and who is in the cast.

The GUNDAM film will have a worldwide theatrical release, which dovetails nicely with Bandai Namco’s desire to expand its licensing and franchise presence beyond the usual territories via the new American arm of its film studio.

This live-action adaptation will be the first time that the IP will live on its own on the big screens, with only fleeting glimpses seen in the past, such as in Ready Player One. Watching the RX-78-2 Gundam taking on Mechagodzilla was a treat, and the hopes is that fans will be eager to watch the actual suits go head to head in their own movie.

Created by Japanese director Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise in 1979, it all began with Mobile Suit Gundam, the anime series. With the main Universal Century timeline at its heart, the popularity of the show led to the creation of a juggernaut multimedia franchise.

This includes more anime series, movies, novels, video games, and toys. Bandai Namco has shared that the franchise generates over US$900 million annually, which is a healthy chunk of change. With a successful live-action movie, that number will only go up.
