Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn Are Being Made into Movies

When it comes to first-party games, it is clear that Sony and PlayStation are leading the way. With the success not just critically but also financially, it should come as no surprise that these IPs are ripe for development into other aspects of entertainment. Under the PlayStation Productions arm, we already know that Ghost of Tsushima will arrive in live-action and anime formats, and it will be joined by two more franchises in Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn

During CES 2025, Sony announced the two game-to-film adaptation projects, with Asad Qizilbash of PlayStation Productions sharing more.

While the touted Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn is currently dead in the water, it should leave plenty of room for the film to make a splash. This is being made possible with a partnership between PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures, and if the studios are able to bring the high-octane, machine dinosaur action of Guerilla Games to life, there will definitely be an audience for that.

“Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are at the early stages of developing a film adaptation of the award-winning Horizon Zero Dawn,” shared Qizilbash. “Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen.”

As for the Helldivers film, it is being helmed by Sony Pictures. The Arrowhead sci-fi military parody already has its roots in the film industry, with Starship Troopers being an obvious inspiration. Taking to space and other planets and dispensing democracy should make for a fun watch, and we are definitely on board.

“Looking ahead as to what might come next, I’m excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2,” added Qizilbash.

Both movies do not have a projected release date just yet, which makes perfect sense. At the very least, now that we know these projects are a thing and PlayStation Productions is taking a central role, they will have more of a chance of making it. Fingers crossed.
