HoYoVerse Cites Lore for Rarity of Ether Agents in Zenless Zone Zero

Hoyoverse Cites Lore for Rarity of Ether Agents in Zenless Zone Zero

The balancing process is one of the most challenging parts of developing an enjoyable and sustainable roleplaying experience. Things become even more complex when they involve a gacha mechanic, requiring developers to continuously introduce new characters and elements with each update. It is no wonder that there are some character types or categories that are reserved for a select few, and in Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ), that honour falls to those capable of utilising the Ether element.

Of the 28 characters introduced in the game, only three have been confirmed to possess the Ether element. Aside from being an obvious incentive for players to chase as part of the gacha process, what is the thinking behind this particular decision?

Speaking with Famitsu, the HoYoVerse team behind Zenless Zone Zero acknowledged this is a purposeful decision that is part of the universe’s lore. They explained that the Ether element, which has been specially created, is rare because it’s not easy to wield.

As a result, they have chosen to handle the characters linked to the element with more care than usual. That has contributed to much frustration within the community due to the lack of options at this current stage, but HoYoVerse will continue to take feedback from players to find ways to expand and integrate the Ether element in the future, so there is still hope for a better balance.

One thing is for sure, there will be more characters introduced in Zenless Zone Zero who can wield the element of Ether effectively, with one just around the corner. Astra Yao will be coming in an upcoming update, and considering that the Hollows can produce plenty of Ether and cause corruption, it should play a bigger role in the overall story in the future.

Zenless Zone Zero is available now on the PlayStation 5, PC, and mobile devices.
