Niantic and Pokémon Go Officially Acquired by Scopely for Us$3.5 Billion

When it was first released, Pokémon GO became an utter phenomenon. The combination of augmented reality features, which perfectly suited the franchise, made it incredibly popular. People started to venture outside more, working together and seeking out communities centred around the game. This long track record of immense success means that Niantic and Pokémon GO have often been the subject of acquisition talks, and that has finally come to pass.

After weeks of speculation, Niantic has now been officially acquired by Scopely, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia-based Savvy Games. The deal is substantial, with the acquisition valued at a staggering US$3.5 billion.

This acquisition does not only involve Niantic as a company, but also all of the games under its management. Titles like Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now are now officially part of Scopely’s portfolio, alongside other live-service applications and services. Scopely already boasts a strong lineup of popular mobile games, including Monopoly GO, Stumble Guys, Star Trek Fleet Command, and Marvel Strike Force.

Despite the acquisition, Niantic’s management remains unchanged, with the company still being led by its existing executives, Kei Kawai and Ed Wu. This ensures the team remains committed to its original ambitions, including executing the roadmaps already planned for Pokémon GO.

“With Scopely’s full commitment, experience and resources, we’re going to make Pokémon GO the very best it can be – with incredible battles for thousands of Trainers at a time at our live events and new ways to connect to your friends and community, all while remaining focused on the excitement and experience of discovering Pokémon in the real world,” said Wu in the blog post.

“We have invested to empower thousands of Community Leaders and Ambassadors who lead millions of Trainers to play together in the real world, and Scopely is in full agreement that this highly-admired program will be a priority to invest in together. The real-world community that loves Pokémon GO will remain our guiding light in all we do.”

Niantic has also reassured players and partners that its collaboration with The Pokémon Company will continue uninterrupted following this acquisition. The company remains confident that this move will further enhance Pokémon GO, making it even better moving forward.
