Nintendo Sets 2025 Deadline for Switch 2 Announcement

It has been seven years since Nintendo introduced the world to the hybrid console that is the Nintendo Switch. With plenty of innovative first-party releases and a growing third-party library, the Japanese gaming giant could very well continue to support the platform without caving in to external pressures about its place within the console space. However, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has now stated that an announcement for the Switch successor will be made by 2025 at the latest.

“We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015,” Furukawa said on X/Twitter.

“We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

The fiscal year will end in March 2025, giving Nintendo about 10 months of runway to develop another winning strategy to reveal the next console. Although power and technical limitations have always been points of contention in the supposed console wars, Nintendo stands tall on its own, and it is likely to remain so even when the new Switch console comes out.

Along with this news, the company also shared its quarterly earnings report covering all three variants of the console. The console’s user base continues to grow steadily, with over 123 million players as of March 2024. While the global sell-through has dropped, a staggering 13.5 million units are being forecasted for the year.

Nintendo Switch Forecasts 2024

This deadline for the reveal of the Nintendo Switch successor will have been good news for fans awaiting the next big thing. Hopefully, it will have a solid launch lineup to keep players busy, just like its predecessor.
