Resistance 4 Could Have Been Real, but Sony Rejected Insomniac Games' Pitch

As one of Sony’s flagship first-party studios, Insomniac Games has delivered time and time again, with superhero adventures being the main genre in recent times. There are the successes of the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, and the future lies in Marvel’s Wolverine. However, that’s not all the studio is known for, with the Resistance first-person shooter series beloved by its fans.

However, it has been years since the IP saw any action, with the last arriving in 2011 with Resistance 3. Despite plenty of clamouring for more, the studio has not answered those demands, but that’s not for the lack of trying.

This was revealed by Ted Price, the former head of Insomniac Games, who has recently retired. Speaking on Kinda Funny Games, Price mentioned that Insomniac had pitched a proposal for Resistance 4 at one point.

“We did pitch that one. It was a wonderful concept, and it just… in terms of timing and market opportunities, it didn’t work out. But it was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about extending the story further,” Price shared. A new Resistance title would have had players explore the origins of the Chimera, providing even more backstory on the iconic enemies and fleshing out the lore even further.

Unfortunately, Sony rejected the proposal due to timing and market conditions at the time. This was around the same time that The Last of Us was on the way from Naughty Dog, and having too many post-apocalyptic games felt like a risk for the company.

Although it was somewhat disappointing, Price still viewed the situation positively. Since Insomniac is a Sony-owned studio, just like the Resistance franchise, there is always a chance for them to revisit and explore it in the future. As Sony moves away from live service games, reviving one of its biggest single-player experiences should be a good move, so here’s hoping.
