It appears that The Game Awards 2024 has something for everyone, and for those harping for a return of a certain sun goddess in wolf form, there is some good news. Accompanied by a stirring musical performance, Capcom finally confirmed the existence of an Okami sequel, and it will be directed once again by Hideki Kamiya.

With Kamiya back at the helm since the first game released back in 2006, Capcom stated that this new project “promises to continue the legendary journey of Amaterasu and her companions.”

The director also had a special message to share with fans:

“‘Until next time…’ How long has it been since the story was concluded with that? I didn’t think the day would really come, where I’d return to Okami and continue the story with my own hands. Even at this very moment, my body is filled with both a cautious surprise that this sin not a dream, and a joy that cannot be described in words,” Kamiya said. “Everyone who has worked so shard to make this project a reality, the friends who believed in me and gathered at CLOVERS Inc., and most importantly, the voices of so many of you who have continued to support Okami even after such a long time: all of this has come together to create this miracle for which I am deeply grateful.”

“Like a strong rising sun, this project is finally in motion. But it’s still a small bud that is blossoming. We are ready to fill this new Okami with many colourful flowers, and to do our best to fulfill the promise of ‘next time’ in the best way. Everyone, please wait with anticipation.

The game is being worked on by the new studio, CLOVERS Inc., which Kamiya is leading, together with M-TWO Inc. and Machine Head Works Inc., which also contained various staff members who were part of the original development team.

Featuring a unique world, a heartwarming story, and many other game elements, the first game is set in a Japanese-style world, where you take on the role of Amaterasu and embark on an adventure to bring back life in an action-adventure experience. Even as the years have gone by, fans continue to pine for a sequel, and their wishes have been granted.
