City builders have been amongst the more popular genres in recent time, but Hooded Horse and Super Fantasy Games are hoping to steer the genre in another direction with its roguelite take, Super Fantasy Kingdom. Aside from worrying about how best to rebuild your kingdom, rulers also have to watch out for the hordes of monsters that will try to burn everything down. Rinse, repeat, and get stronger, that’s the hook for this particular adventure.
Now, the studio has revealed a brand new faction that is trying to take on this gargantuan task of reviving a fallen kingdom. Revealed during the PC Gaming Show’s 2024 Most Wanted broadcast, the Undead Kingdom plays entirely differently from the Human Kingdom, and it’s not just a visual change. Every faction in the game will have its unique playstyle, from the way they collect and utilise resources to the buildings they use and even the broader world outside the kingdom.
The Undead Kingdom’s skeletal populace in Super Fantasy Kingdom is slow and weak but numerous, and there will be tough choices to make – players can leave them in their graves to yield valuable (yet one-off) treasures or raise them to provide needed labour to the kingdom.
There are also rats, which can be eaten to strengthen your heroes or harvested for blood rituals and as part of your production chain. Catacombs can also randomly spawn around the kingdom, which serve as valuable shortcuts for nearby workers and lead to some dynamic building strategies. Outside the kingdom, there’s a new spooky fantasy world to explore, filled with horrors and curios alike, all while celestial beings and daring heroes try to bring down the kingdom every night.
That many differences make things more interesting for the game’s mechanics, and it will be fun to see just what other factions the developers have in mind as the game continues on its development journey.
Super Fantasy Kingdom will be coming to early access on PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store in early 2025.
